The Herald's View: Biloela family saga has gone on for too long
The sad case of the Murugappan family taken from their home in Biloela, Queensland, and detained for the past three years has dragged on for too long.
They were taken from the small town where they had lived for several years and sent, at enormous expense, to the remote Christmas Island detention facility until they exhausted their appeals against deportation.was flown to Perth and diagnosed with septicemia and pneumonia. Yet this might be a good time to make an exception. Even if their parents did enter Australia illegally, keeping children in prolonged detention is an act of cruelty and a denial of basic human rights. The mercy dash to Perth has raised serious questions about whether the young girls can be adequately cared for on Christmas Island. As former chief justice Gerard Brennan said in today’s letters column, this is a “show of heartlessness towards Australian children”.
It is unnecessary, however, to go to these lengths with the Murugappan family. It would only add to the trauma of these two Australian-born girls to send them to another country.
