Minister for NDIS and Government Services Bill Shorten has confirmed the label 'birthing parent' will be removed from government forms after mum Sall Grover sparked outrage on Twitter.
Ms Grover's original tweet garnered more than 1,800 replies, sparking conversations across the country on the topic.
"This is disgusting. I'm not a mother, but there's nothing more important and powerful in recognising we are all born from mothers," one person replied. "I agree. It’s a special and defined role. It’s also one that is overlooked and disregarded. This feels like one more kick in the teeth," another said.
The podcaster posted several more tweets on the issue on Wednesday, comparing the form to something out of Margaret Atwood's 1985 dystopian book The Handmaid's Tale. "Having to sign my name next to the title birthing parent on a government form is just too close to a Handmaid's Tale dystopia for me to feel relaxed and inclusive to be honest," she said.
