Jack Antonoff's megastar mates add stardust to an affecting album powered by underdog angst
Nerds everywhere will applaud the rise of Jack Antonoff, the cheerfully dorky super-producer who has co-authored some of the era’s most gargantuan smashes, most notably, Lorde, and, just to show nobody’s perfect, The 1975. From “Cruel Summer” to The 1975’s maddening Matty Healy, he truly is a collaborator for all seasons.
Amid the never-ending hit parade, Antonoff has somehow carved out space for his band project, Bleachers, who have now released an enjoyably emotive self-titled fourth album. It’s a charming collection of understated indie-pop – with the occasional saxophone solo chucked in as homage to Antonoff’s roots inAntonoff and Springsteen are friends and the younger artist has been known to use his famous pal as a sounding board.
The mood is occasionally upbeat. “We Are Going to Know Each Other Forever”, for instance, was inspired by Antonoff’s marriage to actress Margaret Qualley last year. But there is lots of melancholy, too – a continuation of the sensibility of earlier Bleachers records, which served as an outlet for the trauma Antonoff was working through following the death of his sister when he was 18.Self Respect”.
Still, the emotions he taps are deep and profound and for Swifties stuck for something to do until her next album drops, Bleachers’ latest serving of underdog angst is worth investigating.
