Joe Brumm, the creator of the beloved animated series Bluey, is stepping away from the show to focus on a feature film adaptation. The film, slated for release in 2027, will be written and directed by Brumm and produced by Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios and Disney.
Bluey creator Joe Brumm has revealed he will step away from the beloved cartoon in order to focus on a big screen adaptation of the global hit. The animated feature film will be released in cinemas in 2027, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company said on Wednesday. Brumm will write and direct the film, which is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios, and Disney will release it in cinemas to a global audience.
After its run in movie theatres, it will be streamed on Disney+ and ABC iView and ABC Kids in Australia. The Australian cartoon was first launched in 2018, gaining a worldwide fan base including celebrities such as Natalie Portman and Eva Mendes, and is now shown in 140 countries. Brumm announced his involvement with the film in a heartfelt letter to viewers on the show’s website. “I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last,” Brumm wrote. “This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. “In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such,” he said. Brumm went on to explain it wasn’t “the end of the show” but rather an acknowledgement, that his “focus will be on the film” while production took place. “Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words,” he added. “To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six-year-old world and write authentically.” On Wednesday, Sunrise reporter Georgie Costi was in Brisbane, where the silver screen adventures of the blue heeler and her family will be produced. “That’s pretty much as good as it gets in the animation world getting to work with Disney,” Costi said
