Emergency services have pulled at least 18 bodies from a river near Washington DC after a passenger jet approaching Ronald Reagan National Airport collided midair with an army helicopter, local media reports.

Three soldiers were on the helicopter, which was conducting a training flight at the time of the crash, officials say. PSA was operating the flight for American Airlines.President Donald Trump said he had been “fully briefed on this terrible accident” and, referring to the passengers, added, “May God bless their souls.”

In audio from the air traffic control tower around the time of the crash, AP reports, a controller can be heard asking the helicopter, “PAT25 do you have the CRJ in sight,” in reference to the passenger aircraft. The tower immediately began diverting other aircraft from the airport. The Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine jet involved in the collision was manufactured in 2004 and can be configured to carry up to 70 passengers.
