A man and woman in their 50s have avoided serious injury after the 1940s plane they were flying overturned at Shellharbour Airport in NSW.

Amateur aviation photographer Clinton Down was photographing planes landing at the runway when he saw the crash unfold."I saw the tail go right up and over which was a big shock. Vintage planes often use Shellharbour Airport, which is the home of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society Aviation Museum.
"It is very, very rare these days with airport safety regulations, but unfortunately sometimes these things do happen," he said."This plane is what is called a tail dragger so if you brake too heavy it can become nose heavy and it looks like the propellers have struck the runway and flipped it up and over itself."
