Booze home delivery a cinch for minors | Kaubo
It's too easy for under-age teenagers to get their hands on cheap liquor dropped-off at their doorstep, warn researchers calling for tougher laws to regulate the booming online alcohol delivery market.
"It all just makes it easier for minors to access alcohol," the study’s lead author Stephanie Colbert said."Were are talking about a substance that can cause harm and we need to take this more seriously."Ms Colbert found wide variations in practices. Most of the biggest retailers require proof-of-age for the first or same-day delivery, offering to leave alcohol unattended for subsequent orders.A recent IBIS World report found online liquor sales were worth an estimated $569.
"Many people would be shocked to find that this is simply not the case," Professor Richmond said, calling current regulation "very, very lax". The Foundation of Alcohol Research and Education said self-regulation was "wholly inadequate" and its practices created "significant risks for minors and others vulnerable to alcohol harm."
"Governments are responsible for protecting communities and these research results are highlighting significant regulatory gaps in our existing system of safeguards against alcohol harm," Ms Hepworth said.
