The split from PNG comes after a historic referendum asked locals whether they wanted greater autonomy from PNG or full independence.The South Pacific region of Bougainville has voted for independence from Papua New Guinea. The referendum is nonbinding, and independence would need to be negotiated between leaders from Bougainville and Papua New Guinea.
Bougainville has previously operated as an autonomous region of PNG, and boasts an estimated population of 250,00 people.
