“There’s that rare point where that hype stuff changes the game. That’s where I’m at right now, that’s what I’m sitting on.” –brentfaiyaz
“That’s a Maryland record right there, you know? Like a MARYLAND record,” Brent says with a beaming sense of pride. “Like, GoldLink is from DC, Glizzy is one of the hardest rappers out from DC, and I’m from Columbia, right near Baltimore. That song put on for the area something crazy, it showed the world what we have there in the DMV, that flavor, that sound that you can’t find anywhere else. I’m gonna be proud of what we did forever, cause we helped the DMV touch the world, for real.
Brent has gone through his music career as an independent artist — having turned down several deals — and has applied that “do-it-yourself” mentality to everything. In just three years he put out three consecutive EPs that made him an outlier in the alternative R&B landscape. But he’s also well-aware of the lucrative aspect of music-making; he, and his manager Ty Baisden.
The clip made its rounds on social media over the last couple of months and it caught Faiyaz’s attention again. “Let’s make this clear now: I’m glad this was brought up. I’m making a lot more money now than when that was shot,” Brent says with a laugh. “But I think the knowledge needs to be out there. It’s important to show that independent artists can generate a living and career for themselves, and it was important to put that game out there for someone who’s on their way.
The 24-year-old has seen how long it takes to become something like an overnight sensation, and he’s looking to channel his experiences into a vessel of music that’s bound to last the test of time, unapologetically. His newest single “F*ck The World ” tells a tale of a young man living life as only he can, providing the same braggadocious energy that his peers in rap music are known to emulate. But that’s where Brent is, and that’s where he’s aiming to go.
“I’m at a point now where I’m saying whatever the f*ck I want, whether in my life or in my music,” Brent says. “I used to think that there was a certain way I had to stick to when it came to R&B, but now I’m saying whatever, the same way these rappers do. I’m bringing that into R&B music.”
