Australian brewers are desperately trying to prevent a looming price increase on beer, set to take effect on Monday. The alcohol excise is expected to rise by 2-3 percent, potentially crippling independent brewers. The Brewers Association of Australia is urging the government to reconsider the increase, citing the already high beer tax rates and the affordability concerns for consumers.

Australia n brewers are making a last-ditch effort to prevent a price hike on beer that is set to take effect on Monday. The alcohol excise is projected to rise by 2-3 percent on February 3rd, and independent brewers are warning that this increase could be the final blow for many businesses. The Brewers Association of Australia has submitted a plea to the Treasurer's Budget consultation process, urging for immediate action to address the escalating rates of beer tax.

'On behalf of brewers and beer drinkers across Australia, we are asking for urgent action to address the high rates of beer tax,' stated John Preston, CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia. 'We already have one of the highest beer tax rates globally – there is no justification for it to continue rising twice a year.' Brewers argue that the tax increase will make it financially unfeasible for Australians to enjoy a cold beer at a reasonable price. Preston emphasized that 'All these tax hikes are doing is making it increasingly unaffordable for Australians to visit their local pubs for a beer.' He pointed to the example of the newly elected Labour Government in the United Kingdom, which, in its first Budget, continued the reductions in beer tax initiated by the previous Conservative government. 'We believe the Treasurer should emulate the example set by his British counterpart and provide much-needed relief to beer drinkers and our hospitality sector,' Preston added.
