Sky News host Caleb Bond has labelled the response to calls for a royal commission into child sexual abuse in Indigenous Communities “despicable”, singling out rebel Liberal MP Bridget Archer for opposing an investigation into the issue.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton tabled a motion for a royal commission in parliament on Thursday, calling on the Prime Minister to support the proposal – which is being pushed by Northern Territory Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.

This is far from the first time Ms Archer has crossed the floor to vote against her own party – she has done so more than 27 times since she was elected in 2019. “A genuine issue was raised, a real issue that destroys lives, and those raising it are accused of doing so for political advantage by a member of their own team.”

“The Institute of Health and Welfare also says that rates of sexual assault reported to police in 2012 among Indigenous children aged 0-9 in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory were 2 to 4 times higher than rates among non-Indigenous children.
