About 70,000 people are expected to flock to the MCG on Boxing Day in what is expected to be the second biggest crowd at the venue since the onset of the pandemic last year. BoxingDay Ashes cricket

Fans have been warned they risk being turfed out of the MCG if they flout mask rules, as the threat of Omicron casts a cloud over the Boxing Day Test

With some 55,000 tickets sold for Boxing Day, around 70,000 people are expected to flock to the MCG for the first day in what is expected to be the second biggest crowd at the venue since the onset of the pandemic last year. Only 30,000 were allowed per day to last year’s game against India after a deadly second wave in Melbourne.

The MCC has full faith its COVID-19 protocols will measure up in the event the venue becomes an exposure site during the game. A COVID-safe plan was in place during the AFL season when the venue hosted 32 games before the Delta wave in Melbourne forced games to again be played behind closed doors.Thousands of fans were forced into isolation after a positive case attended a game between Carlton and Geelong in July.

“We had the data through to health for that particular event within two or three minutes. We’ve got a good handle on it.”Fans have been told to bring a mask to the game as they will likely be required to enter bars and restaurants at the venue. Cricket and ground officials are awaiting a final ruling from the Department of Health on mask guidelines. The MCC is urging spectators to show “common sense”.
