Almost 6000 people have attended their Australian citizenship ceremony this week.

Brisbane has dealt with a backlog of citizenship applications by welcoming almost 6000 new Australian citizens in three days.

“There are now thousands of people from across the world who want to become Australian citizens and call Brisbane home which is fantastic. Schrinner said more than 5800 citizens from 130 countires were sworn in at ceremonies in City Hall and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.“For many, this is the final step in their journey to becoming an Australian and it’s such a privilege for these new citizens to choose Brisbane as their place to live, work or raise a family,” he said.Schrinner said the top three countries of origin for new citizens were India, the United Kingdom and the Philippines.

The Department of Home Affairs received 125,621 applicants who attended a citizenship ceremony while 129,861 are awaiting a decision and 76,332 are awaiting a ceremony.COVID-19 public health orders disrupted in-person citizenship test appointments and conducting citizenship ceremonies.
