Brisbane rates are expected to rise in Wednesday’s council budget, but some cost-of-living measures will help mitigate the pain.
Almost 40,000 Brisbane pensioners will receive rates discounts of up to 40 per cent in Wednesday’s $4.3 billion council budget.
On each quarterly rates bill, full pensioners will get a rebate of up to $290.25 – or $145.25 for part-pensioners – in Brisbane City Council’s cost-of-living budget.Fast-growing Brisbane now faces the highest inflation of any Australian capital, with its 330,000 households sweating on how much their rates will rise on Wednesday.
Household costs, electricity, rent and transport rose by 1.9 per cent between Christmas and March – the highest in Australia – to give Brisbane residents an overall 7.4 per cent increase in costs in the past 12 months,Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner would not reveal Brisbane’s exact rates increase, however Gold Coast City Council on Monday announced a 5.5 per cent rise.
But there is good news for public transport users, with the subsidy to increase by $100 million to almost $1 billion by 2026-27, providing either fare discounts on additional bus routes to be introduced in 2024, or an extension of free seniors travel to cover peak hour.Council pool entry fees will drop to a flat $2 per person – down from $6 or $7 – from December to February.
Permit fees ranging from $1650 to $3393 for community events and festivals will be reduced or scrapped.New bus routes will be introduced after checks by Translink.Previous rates rises
