Queensland councils are asking for commitments from state government parties towards scoring a “fairer funding deal” for nationally significant infrastructure projects.Last year, the federal government changed the default funding distribution on these projects from an 80/20 split with local and state governments to a 50/50 split, “so both levels of government carry an equal share of both the benefits and the risks”.

But the Local Government Association of Queensland said it wanted the decision reversed, particularly for projects such as the Bruce Highway.“What we’re looking for is commitments that, come November once we’re clear of a state election, we would take a Team Queensland delegation down to Canberra to argue for fairer funding for our roads,” LGAQ chief executive Alison Smith said.“We are Australia’s most decentralised mainland state.
