The Uniting Church has succeeded in its bid to remove a Wilston landmark from the Queensland Heritage Register.Brisbane City Council had previously rejected an application to demolish the former Wilston Methodist Memorial Church, which sits on a corner site fronting Kedron Brook Road. The disused building was then afforded protection by the Queensland Heritage Council, prompting church lawyers to appeal to the Planning and Environment Court.
In a recent decision, Judge Michael Williamson agreed the 1950s church was still intact but found it did not meet the threshold for heritage protection.“Having regard to visual aids before the court, and the benefit of a site inspection, I was satisfied the place has visual and aesthetic merit,” Williamson said.
