Firefighters are reminding people to consider the consequences of not having working smoke alarms after the death of an elderly man in a Broken Hill home overnight.

After containing the blaze, crews were able to enter the home where they found the body of a man in a bedroom.As the cause of the fire is investigated, authorities are reminding people about the importance of having smoke alarms that work.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales Duty Commander Inspector Matt Hunter said three appliances and 12 firefighters attended the incident, with assistance from the Rural Fire Service, police and paramedics. Upon gaining access shortly after 3am, they found the body of a man. He is yet to be formally identified but is aged in his 70s and believed to be the occupant.

Staff, who regularly undertake fire-safety training, were quick to take action and prevented the blaze from spreading further. A Tasmanian MP spoke at an event with sovereign citizens. One of them plans to create a 'parallel society'
