Dawud Abu Junid Gos is the Muqaddam of Broken Hill's Sufi community, a title he describes as the "right-hand man" of the Shaykh . "We do all the Islamic practises and believe what Muslims believe. But we try to embark on a spiritual journey to know God."A decision that Dr Abu Bakr Sirajuddin Cook — a research fellow at the Almiraj Sufi and Islamic Study Centre and Wasi of the Sufis — says was partly rooted in the regional city's unique history. He says the city has been a good fit for the Sufi community.
Both Muqaddam Dawud and Dr Bakr say the long travel time required to visit the Sufi Centre's headquarters is a benefit of the regional location."For us, actions are based on intentions," Dr Bakr said. Muqaddam Dawud, who has the authority to initiate newcomers into the Sufi centre's community, says most of Broken Hill's Muslim community attend the centre."The bookshop is the head." Muqaddam Dawud says.He says that over the years the bookshop has diversified its stock.Lastly, Muqaddam Duwad points to the Sufi Bakery as the "limbs" of the body, reaching out to the community.
