Residents of a tiny town in the NSW Riverina region are battling to save their historic bakery from becoming a petrol station, as regional areas prove attractive servo investments.
It's a weekday morning, but the main street of Walla Walla in southern New South Wales is incredibly quiet.
Thistle Cafe made its home in Walla Walla's 114-year-old bakery building, which boasts an historic F Metters & Co wood-fired peel oven. The historic bakery does not have any statutory heritage protection, but was included in a heritage conservation area in the Greater Hume Development Control Plan 2013.
"Councils are often faced with complex decisions that require careful consideration of various factors, including community priorities and commercial interests," a spokesperson said. Neighbouring Albury City, with a population of 57,000, has approved two service stations since 2020, with current applications for a further two yet to be determined by council.
