Queensland deputy premier Jarrod Bleijie has condemned the $850 fine given to Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam for drug driving and driving without a license, calling it 'disgraceful' and 'not passing the pub test'. Mam pleaded guilty to the charges following a head-on collision in October. The incident injured a four-year-old child. While Bleijie expressed his disappointment, Attorney General Deb Frecklington stated that any decision regarding an appeal would be made by her office after consultation with colleagues. Frecklington also acknowledged public expectations for stricter penalties for drug-impaired driving compared to mobile phone use while driving.

Mam pleaded guilty to driving with a relevant drug in his blood and driving without a licence in Brisbane magistrates court on Monday Queensland ’s deputy premier has labelled Broncos star Ezra Mam’s $850 fine for drug driving without a licence “disgraceful”, saying it doesn’t “pass the pub test”.

He was charged after a head-on collision between his Ford Ranger and a Toyota Camry in Brisbane’s inner west, on 18 October.“When many Queenslanders are fined for far lesser offences, fined far greater than what Ezra did, I don’t think it passes the pub test at all,” the deputy premier, Jarrod Bleijie, said.

“Many Queenslanders will be looking at that – a celebrity footballer, an $850 fine driving while drugged and hits another car, dangerously. This government, the LNP government, takes a zero-tolerance approach to drugs … Queenslanders would have expected more.” “Most Queenslanders would expect that the penalty for a driver who’s found to have drugs in their system would be more severe than the penalty for using a mobile phone behind the wheel,” she said.He said the Bronco was “fortunate to stand where you are today given you were involved in a two-vehicle motor accident”.
