However, Mr Inman said he could "quickly" get to the site, and has asked the government if he could launch a private recovery effort. That request has been turned down by the government.
He said finding out information from authorities has been difficult, and it would be "10 times worse" for families who aren't from the area. "We're frustrated, we're processing the situation, but I'm well connected in the community, I'm getting info before the police are even giving it to me so I know what's happening, versus an Australian family who have no connections and no family here, it must be heart wrenching for them, my heart goes out to them," Mr Inman said.A photo provided by tourist Michael Schade shows rescuers leaving White Island following the eruption.
Volcanologist Nico Fournier, from the New Zealand's monitoring and research body GNS Science, said the risk of another eruption was between 40 and 60 per cent."Because the volcano is not erupting, it doesn't mean it cannot erupt and the eruption probability is still very high." NZ Police's officer in charge of the operation Mike Clement said he would not make the call to send in recovery teams until the risk of another eruption had lowered.
