Cleveland native Anthony Freeborn calls Landry “the one who turned the page.” Dan Mihelich, who grew up in Brunswick, says Landry “embodied Cleveland.”
But when the Browns returned, they were losers, both on the field and in free agency. Freeborn remembers that Cleveland could only convince big names to sign if those players were past their prime and paid over market -- think Jamal Lewis, Willie McGinest, Dwayne Bowe.
He continued for two minutes, reminding his fellow receivers that a weak practice approach is “contagious,” and the Browns wouldn’t be that way anymore. Count Mihelic, Freeborn and Keener in the latter category. All three said Landry needed to play longer in Cleveland or produce bigger numbers to earn the Browns’ highest honor, but all three remember him fondly.
Maybe some day he’ll come back. Landry won’t play this weekend, but his contract with New Orleans expires after the season, and both Denzel Ward and Nick Chubb said this week that they’d welcome him back.
