Work has started on the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre site
The area around Southport's Promenade has undergone a rapid transformation this week after parts of the town's historic former theatre were torn down. The ongoing demolition works are being carried out on the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre as the site is cleared and prepared for the hugely anticipated Marine Lake Events Centre development.
The STCC was closed in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but Sefton Council quickly put forward proposals to develop the site and replace the theatre with a 'world-class' events facility. After years of consultation and planning, a proposal for the Marine Lake Events Centre was approved and construction work to clear the site has picked up pace in recent months.
The MLEC is one of a number of schemes being developed as a result of the successful bid for £37.5m of Town Deal funding for Southport and has benefited from £17.7m of funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Sefton Council have already announced the securing of ASM Global, who will manage the £73 million venue on the resort’s promenade.
Earlier this week, three huge projectors had to be carefully lifted out of the building by crane in a planned operation by the local authority's demolition contractor DSM. Such is the size of the machines, the roof of the former theatre had to be removed before the projectors could be taken out. They were last formally used in Southport in the 1990s before demand for live shows became so high that theatre managers took the decision to stop showing movies.
