The bureau is predicting this year’s cyclone season will be about average, but high ocean temperatures, responsible for giving cyclones their destructive energy, might mean they’re stronger than usual.
High ocean temperatures may lead to cyclones being more destructive, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, ahead of what is expected to be a "pretty typical" storm season.
"The last few years authorities have said to expect more cyclones, in total number as well as intensity," she said. "We have learned. Every year we do a review of our disaster season, and we did a review of last season… and I feel that the lessons from that have been built into this year already," he said.
"Every year in Queensland we lose more lives through people taking risks, driving through floodwaters, than we do from our severe weather season," he said. Bushfires have been causing headaches for some, particularly in small regional towns, but being prepared has ensured no lives have been lost.
