A bus driver was beaten to death in a “barbaric” attack after asking passengers to wear face masks on his bus.

Philippe Monguillot, 59, was declared brain dead after being viciously assaulted in Bayonne, France on Sunday.

Veronique Monguillot, the wife of bus driver Philippe Monguillot, took to the streets to last week to protest over the violence he and other bus drivers are facing in France after rules stated passengers have to wear masks. Picture: Gaizka Iroz/AFPDespite being hopeful he would pull through in hospital, Philipe’s injuries were too severe.His 18-year-old daughter Marie said his family and doctors had decided to “let him go”.

“There were insults and then shoving. The bus driver was pushed out of the bus,” the prosecutor said. Claude Olive, the Mayor of Bayonne, said meetings were in progress to try and improve security on buses.
