A brief respite from scorching temperatures has provided firefighters battling a massive bushfire in Victoria's Grampians National Park with some much-needed relief. The blaze, spanning over 360km and having scorched an area equivalent to Singapore, has slowed its spread thanks to cooler conditions. While residents on the eastern side of the park have been allowed to return, hot, northerly winds are forecast to return, pushing temperatures back into the 30s.
A cool change has brought some much-needed relief to firefighters as an out-of-control bushfire rages on, but in the coming days hot, northerly winds will again push the mercury higher. The blaze in the Grampians National Park , with a perimeter of more than 360km has already scorched at least 74,000 ha, an area equivalent to the nation of Singapore.
Buildings destroyed as Victorian bushfires raze 74,000 ha. State Control Centre spokesman Luke Hegarty said after some of the worst conditions since 2019’s Black Summer on Thursday, it was safe to return for residents to the eastern side of the park, from Lake Vines to Dunkeld, including Moyston and Willaura. “Whilst the bushfire in the national park is not yet under control, the spread of the bushfire has slowed for now,” Hegarty said.
