Adelaide Hills father Daniel Katz admits he did not go through the proper channels when building a bushfire bunker at his family home, but now fears he will be forbidden from using the structure even as a last resort.
Daniel Katz installed the six-person shelter, without getting approval, at his home in the Adelaide Hills in 2021.
He said his local council later told him to remove the building — which he said was of a type that had been approved for use in Victoria — but that, after appealing against the council's decision, he had instead been ordered to put a padlock on the shelter until the matter was resolved. That review was publicly released last week and concluded in favour of existing arrangements, finding that the current approvals system was generally "effective".
"The concern was that without a level of statutory protection, authorities may not be willing to approve a private bushfire shelter, out of concern for insurance as well as criminal proceedings." "The review found the current approval process is effective and recommends additional steps to ensure shelters remain compliant and well maintained," Mr Champion said.Speaking to ABC Radio Adelaide last week, Mr Champion said the problem in Mr Katz's case was the way in which he had gone about installing the bunker.
