The number of foster carers in the state is in decline, but their services are needed more than ever.
A report has identified a 159 per cent jump in the number of children requiring foster care in WA over the past two decades.Carers such as Neil Holthouse and Kate Gordon are spearheading an effort to recruit more foster families.
"It's all about cultural change, and we wanted to be part of that change as well," Mr Holthouse said. A report conducted by WA's Commission for Children and Young People showed the number of children in state care rose from 1,993 in 2004 to 5,174 in 2023. "There are over 2,300 foster carer households across WA that play an important role in supporting children," they said.Ms Gordon and Mr Holthouse were required to do six months of behaviour and trauma management training to prepare for taking a child into care."I think a lot of it is about your own journey and what you've experienced in your own life and making sure that you're at peace with your own things before you become foster carers," she said.
