Civil liberties advocates in Queensland remain concerned the cameras could capture nudity, underwear or private moments and are calling on the government to release the findings of two independent reviews into the privacy implications.

Mobile and seatbelt detection cameras have raised $419.8 million in revenue since their introduction in Queensland in 2021.

There have been multiple reviews into the program's effectiveness and privacy policies but the results are yet to be made public, and a civil liberties advocate says this isn't good enough. "There needs to be absolutely fail-safe privacy protections … to ensure that intimate or quasi-intimate pictures are not gathered … and used when those people are bored for their own private viewing."The ABC is not aware of any allegations or formal complaints that would suggest the photos have been handled inappropriately. The camera program is run by the Department of Transport and Main Roads , and the Queensland Revenue Office, which has the power to collect fines.

"We welcome the fact that the department has had two reviews of the privacy consequences of this AI technology, but we call on them to publish the report.
