There are calls for an immediate return of alcohol bans in the Northern Territory’s Indigenous communities and town camps after a dramatic rise in crime and domestic violence in Alice Springs.
It has been just over six months since the Stronger Futures laws lapsed, meaning alcohol was suddenly legal for the first time in many Aboriginal town camps in 15 years.
Chief Minister Natasha Fyles will be in Alice Springs on Tuesday, where she’s expected to make an announcement around alcohol, but it’s yet to be seen whether she’ll announce the bans will be reinstated.
