Evenity was subsidised on the PBS last year but has a strict access scheme.
The treatment, Evenity , was subsidised on theHowever, it has a strict access scheme and is limited to patients who've had two or more fractures and who are deemed high risk on their bone mineral density scans. This means many Australians living with osteoporosis are missing out.
"We would certainly advocate for wider access to such a blockbuster drug," Healthy Bones Australia Medical Director Peter Wong said."My spine, I don't have one vertebra that hasn't fractured or compressed, I've lost nine centimetres in height," David said."I've been on all the medications and none of them have worked until now."David started using Evenity which has since changed the quality of her life.
Rheumatologists say Evenity can strengthen weak bones in two ways, including forming new bone and reducing bone breaking down which makes it a preferable treatment for osteoporosis sufferers like David. "It not only makes new bone but it also reduces the bone being chewed up it increases bone formation and reduces bone resorption so it's a win-win situation so what we see is a marked increase in bone thickness," Wong said.Experts are advocating for Evenity to be used as a first-line treatment due to the seriousness of the condition.
"There's a 30 per cent chance you will die in the next 12 months following a hip fracture so this is a very serious condition," Wong added. The most triple vaccinated countries on Earth
