Thousands of scientists are working to find a coronavirus vaccine. At the same time, shadowy groups are already trying to derail it.
An unprecedented global research effort is underway to discover, develop and deploy a vaccine for the deadlyBut bringing an end to the crisis, which has crippled economies and wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, faces a significant hurdle thanks to the anti-vaxxer movement.by the independent organisation Media Matters found the three most prominent anti-vaxxer groups in the United States are already laying the groundwork for “widespread coronavirus vaccine rejection”.
It warned that efforts to “poison the well” are just beginning and, if they’re successful, America could face a “public health disaster”. “Then we have a group who vaccinate selectively, and then a much bigger group of people who vaccinate fully, but who are also concerned about vaccines.” “It is important that these groups, as well as those who vaccinate without concerns, are given confidence that any vaccine against COVID-19 is safe and beneficial.”in the midst of the country’s strict coronavirus lockdown in April found that one-quarter of respondents would’ve refused a vaccine.
And there will probably be people lining up, demanding they get it, even if they’re not in the priority category.“Then there will be some people who have a lot of concern and are nervous, followed by some people who are against the idea and can never be convinced, followed finally by some who are activists and will work night and day to undermine the program.”
“There’s a challenge to ensure we can produce enough stock of all the things needed for vaccines – glass vials, caps, etc … then getting a new vaccine into countries, which is a complex process – training healthcare workers, for example. Jane Halton is a top former bureaucrat, chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and sits on the Commonwealth’s COVID-19 Coordination Commission. She gave a speech at the National Press Club in May about the risk of “vaccine nationalism”.“As soon as there is a vaccine, I fear that we will maybe not be quite all in it as together as we have been. The urge for domestic priority, I think, will be very significant.
