Former Allens chief executive Michael Rose has two years to convince the inner west that business will not spoil a large, decaying park.
They successfully banned businesses from the 61-hectare Callan Park, where about 60 buildings decay from lack of use or investment. A few are beautiful sandstone relics from the 1800s. Most, according to the trust’s chairman and a former chief executive of the Allens law firm, Michael Rose, are worthless. Children tell each other they’re haunted.
“I wondered if some people wanted the park to lock out the public so only a few people could use it,” Stokes says. Despite Greens and Labor endorsement of Stokes’ structure, local lobby groups continue to whip up opposition.
