At a time of a global pandemic, a rise in revenge porn and an upcoming US election, deepfakes are causing experts concern as the lines between reality and fiction become increasingly blurred.

A small group of "super recognisers" were able to detect fakes at about 95 per cent accuracy, he said. In June 2019, an app named DeepNude was pulled from Windows and Linux stores after outrage at its ability to digitally alter images to remove women's clothes. "So often technology outpaces policy and we're left flat-footed, but I feel we've got a good set of laws that can help us and help victims if they do fall prey to these kinds of deepfakes."
