Parachuted into the Australian squad ahead of the Melbourne Test, Konstas became a household name following a thrilling Boxing Day half-century that rattled Jasprit Bumrah and his Indian teammates on day one at the MCG. After Bumrah terrorised Australia’s top order throughout the opening three Tests of the campaign, Konstas smacked 33 runs off 34 balls during the Indian quick’s opening spell in Melbourne, ramping him for three boundaries in an over. “I was a spectator that first session,” Carey recalled of Konstas’ breakout knock while speaking to reporters at the SCG on Wednesday afternoon.“At times I couldn’t watch it, at times I was cheering.” Carey praised Konstas’ counterpunching “intensity”, which was similar to what retired opener David Warner brought to the team before his retirement, after Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney struggled for runs in the opening three Tests. “Just the energy he bought, it was something different. Probably wasn’t expecting that amount of difference, but he played a style of cricket that was probably new to India as well,” Carey continued. “We’ll wait and see how he plays out here. I don’t think that’s his blueprint every Test match, but to be able to throw a few punches early and get a bit of momentum for us, the opening partnership was probably just lacking that intensity. “I thought Nathan and Usman got us through tough situations as well by facing lots of balls.
