A tsunami warning issued for the Caribbean Sea has been cancelled following a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitude. The quake struck southwest of the Cayman Islands and north of Honduras, prompting initial tsunami forecasts for Cuba, Honduras, and the Cayman Islands. The US Tsunami Warning System later declared the threat passed.

A tsunami warning has been cancelled in the Caribbean Sea after the region’s most powerful earthquake in four years struck in the southwest of the Cayman Islands and north of Honduras . The earthquake struck at 6:23pm local time on Saturday and was measured at a magnitude of 7.6 and occurred at a depth of 10km, according to the United States Geological Survey . The quake’s epicentre was located about 200km south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands , USGS said.

The US Tsunami Warning System had initially forecast waves of up to three metres for Cuba and between 0.3 and one metre for Honduras and the Cayman Islands but later said the threat had passed. The US Tsunami Warning System had also issued advisories for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands following the quake, which was later cancelled. It was unclear if there was any movement or damage on land. The quake was the biggest to hit the region since 2021, when a 7.
