Melissa lives in one Melbourne tower. Her grandma in need of care lives in another
When she got the news on Saturday that she had to return to her flat on the 17th floor of the Flemington public housing estate and be locked in for five days, Melissa Whelan was at Woolworths buying groceries.
Her grandmother, whose name she didn't want to use, has had some meals delivered since Friday but Ms Whelan said they were hand-delivered by people outside the Department of Health and Human Services network supposed to be helping her.On Saturday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced a five-day "hard lockdown" of nine public housing towers in North Melbourne and Flemington which are home to about 3000 people, including Ms Whelan.
"It's to tell us what is happening, but no one can hear," she said. "So everyone goes to the lifts and goes downstairs to hear what it is, and the announcement is to tell people not to use the lifts."
