Shadow workplace relations minister Michaelia Cash is demanding the Albanese government take further action against the 'recidivist' CFMEU after former Victorian head John Setka avoided charges for addressing an unauthorised rally.
Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash has written to Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt , demanding the Albanese government introduce further legislation targeting the CFMEU after former Victoria n secretary John Setka avoided charges for addressing an unauthorised rally.
Mr Setka made a shock appearance on one of Victoria's largest construction sites, delivering an expletive-laden speech to dozens of workers in which he attacked the government and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Picture: TikTok "The disgraced former frontman of the CFMEU, John Setka, is not currently a union official. He does not have the right to enter building sites. He does not represent workers, and yet over the past week, he has been addressing worker rallies on construction sites funded by Australian taxpayers, speaking against the CFMEU administration.
"If Labor is serious about cleaning up the CFMEU, it will introduce legislation as soon as possible so that disgraced officials like Mr Setka cannot access construction sites - especially those funded by Australian taxpayers. The Coalition will of course work constructively to ensure that such legislation passes the parliament expeditiously."
Mr Irving also revealed the union was in far worse state than had been previously thought, with the administrator calling out the failure of state and federal bodies to prevent criminal behaviour from infiltrating the CFMEU. "They've been nowhere near close enough. They've been ineffective in this space and they need to be better."
