The government will attempt to force the Senate to vote this week on the CFMEU legislation, after failing to win over either the Greens or the Coalition.

“For years Michaelia Cash and the Coalition have complained about the CFMEU. Now they have an opportunity to help Labor fix the problem.“This vote is a test for Peter Dutton and the Greens – how serious are they about stamping out organised crime, bullying and thuggery in the construction industry?” After their party room meeting on Tuesday, the Greens listed their key concerns as; why the legislation applies to the ACT and Western Australian construction divisions when no allegations had been levelled against them; why the bill allows placing the union into administration for three years, when the FWC cited two as being necessary; and why the bill allowed natural justice to be overridden.

Senator Cash, the shadow industrial relations minister, has already said the three-year administration period was too short, and five years, which was the maximum period a sacked official could be banned from acting as a bargaining agent, was too short.
