A woman reclaims her career and creativity in Where'd You Go Bernadette, from Before Sunrise director Richard Linklater.

Contrary to the best-selling book on which it's based, the question posed by the title of the latest film from American indie mainstay Richard Linklater is all but answered in the first few minutes.

The scenes set in Antarctica were shot in Greenland, and one was shot on a boat while it was in the eye of a storm. Emma Nelson says her character Bee is a middle ground between her artistic and emotionally intelligent mother and more logical and book-smart father. In her case, this seems to manifest primarily as intolerance of the gossip-mongering mothers at Bee's middle school. No great crime, but the unruly heroine must nevertheless be redeemed — via a moderately madcap series of events , cruising towards the Antarctic denouement at a relentless plod.

From early cult hits Slacker and Dazed and Confused through to the epic coming-of-age film Boyhood and the college campus antics of Everybody Wants Some!! , Linklater is a filmmaker who gravitates towards narratives that meander; in which any given destination figures as less important than the roads taken, and the people you meet along the way.
