The tiny coastal town of Cheynes Beach is still waiting for answers 12 months after one of the largest mass pilot whale standings in Australian history.

A pod of 97 pilot whales beached themselves at Cheynes Beach , east of Albany, on July 25 last year.A year on from one of the largest mass whale standings in Australian history, this tiny coastal town is still waiting for answers.

The whales were spotted that morning, huddling tightly in the water off the beach, in an ominous sign.Asher and Brett Peake were two of the hundreds of local volunteers who rushed to the aid of the animals, hoping to rescue them."We started seeing them missile straight into the beach," Mr Peake said.The Peakes were among a handful of locals at first trying to save the whales by pushing them back out to sea.

"People do bring it up, sometimes people want to know the nitty gritty about exactly what happened and how did they euthanase them," Ms Marsh said.
