Health officials say at least 20 people have been infected from six states.

Health officials believe the Earth Grown brand frozen falafel sold at ALDI stores may be contaminated with bacteria and is making people sick.

As of October 7, health officials said 20 people have been infected from six states between July 13 and September 13. The states listed are Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas. Some strains of E. coli, a bacteria that live in the intestines of people and animals, can be particularly dangerous to infants, young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

Their ages range from less than one to 71 years old, with a median age of 31. Health officials said at least five people have been hospitalized including one person who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure. The infections were traced back to the product in question after several people were interviewed and most reported that they shopped at ALDI. Some also reported eating the falafel in the week before getting sick.
