Peter Bishop, the coach of Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers, has had his coaching accreditation revoked by Swimming Australia after an investigation.

Kyle Chalmers’ Olympic preparations have been dealt a major blow three months before he is due to depart for Paris after his coach, Peter Bishop, was banned from attending this year’s Games in an official capacity.

The South Australian Sports Institute has launched an investigation into Bishop and relieved him of his regular coaching duties.“Following this investigation, SASI can confirm that Craig Stewart has been promoted to the role of head coach, with Peter Bishop reassigned into a role focused on developing talent and strategies as SASI aims to maximise success during the 2028 and 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games cycles,” SASI said in a statement.

Bishop, who also trains Australian butterfly star Matt Temple, will not be allowed to travel with the Dolphins to the upcoming Olympics, which start in July.Kyle Chalmers chats to coach Peter Bishop in 2021.“Swimming Australia has been informed of a recent investigation and findings by the South Australia Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing into South Australian Sports Institute high-performance swimming program,” read a statement from SA.

“This was an independent process and part of the recommendations include the restructuring of this program.“Swimming Australia respects the process and findings and has revoked Peter Bishop’s coaching accreditation until the end of the Olympic cycle, upon which he is eligible to reapply.”Bishop helped Chalmers claim a remarkable gold medal in the 100m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has worked with him since.
