How often do you buy new sheets? And how often do you consider their environmental impact? Increased demand for sustainable bedding and textile manufacturing is driving a boon in environmentally focused homewares companies.
We spend a third of our life in bed. That’s about 50 hours per week between the sheets. Bedding companies traditionally suggest replacing those sheets every two to three years, contributing to the staggeringBut as today’s consumers demand greater sustainability from their purchases, a handful of Australian companies are trying to tackle textile waste by combining luxe products with resource-conscious reuse schemes and environmentally-friendly business models.
Phoebe Yu, the founder of Ettitude, has established a takeback program called Loop that collects and sorts lightly used from heavily used products to be donated or reused.lyocell fabric that can be reused through the company’s takeback program, Loop. Established in 2020, the program collects and sorts lightly used from heavily used products. The latter is shredded into a fibre for reuse in insulation or animal beds.
“In a circular economy context, recycling is the third tier down in terms of priorities to achieve zero waste,” Toumbourou says. “The first necessary steps need to be avoidance and reduction, and then reuse and repair … You absolutely have to start in the design phase with the end-of-life in mind.”By creating products with end-of-life design at the core, Marcus Nelson of Loop Home hopes to provide an alternative to traditional bedding.
