Jacob Firestone, 18, of Highland Park, was charged with obstruction of justice in connection with the death of Matthew Ascaridis.
Police said Firestone took steps to conceal evidence of the confrontation that took place at the Lake County Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve site along Lake Michigan at about 1 a.m. Saturday.Police said that Firestone and Nicholas Caban, 20, were along the lakeshore being loud, and that Ascaridis, 45, came out of his nearby house in response to the noise.
A violent confrontation ensued that led to the death of Ascaridis, authorities said. Firestone was injured in the fight and had been hospitalized until Tuesday, police said. He was taken into custody after he was released, and his bail was set at $75,000 Wednesday.Caban, a Highland Park resident, was taken into custody Saturday on a weapons charge not related to the confrontation.
The Lake County state’s attorney’s office has not filed any charges directly stemming from the confrontation, though they are under consideration, police said Wednesday. Ascaridis, who had an MBA degree from the University of Notre Dame, was a financial planner and father of two who was active in youth hockey, according to his obituary and online sources. A graveside service was set for Wednesday in Arlington Heights.
