One in four Australians have severely limited access to childcare, while 700,000 have virtually no access at all, a report has revealed. Victoria University’s Mitchell Institute mapped childcare access across nine nations for more than 10 million children, tracking approaches that provided fairer access for families. About 24 per cent of Australians live in a childcare desert, where there are more than three children per childcare spot.

“These are the neighbourhoods that also have higher childcare fees, showing providers are attracted to areas where they can charge more,” the study found. Sweden and Norway bucked this trend, offering some of the fairest access to families regardless of the wealth of their neighbourhood. Australia ranked fourth-best in childcare accessibility of the nine nations tracked in the study.
