The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has flagged its attention to reject Qantas’ long-running partnership with China Eastern over concerns the airlines may behave anti-competitively.

The consumer watchdog has flagged it is likely to deny Qantas’ application to extend its eight-year partnership with China Eastern, in the latest of a string of setbacks for Australia’s largest airline business.

The watchdog blocked Qantas’ attempted acquisition of fly-in, fly-out provider Alliance Aviation in April to strengthen competition on routes in regional and remote areas of Australia, after delaying the decision four times over the year. Qantas was granted conditional approval to continue its partnership with Emirates in August. It was also granted approval to continue coordination with its low-cost carrier Jetstar in the Asia-Pacific region in April. Qantas’ application to extend its partnership with JAL was rejected in 2021.Qantas has been embroiled in a series of scandals since posting a $2.47 billion profit for the 2023 financial year last month.

“Politicians like flying, but they do not understand it,” Goodwin told the Centre for Aviation’s annual summit in Brisbane on Friday. and ends a long-running legal battle between the carrier business and the Transport Workers Union after the group stood down employees at 11 airports in November 2020.The Flight Attendants Association of Australia’s Teri O’Toole told the conference that Qantas’ creation of a multitude of different agreements for the airline’s flight attendants has had a worse effect than COVID-19 itself.
