China is halving hotel quarantine for arrivals to seven days in the first easing of Xi Jinping’s tight border controls imposed at the start of the pandemic.
| China has halved its quarantine time for travellers arriving in the country to one week in the first significant easing ofChina, one of the last countries in the world still pursuing a zero-case strategy, said 14-day hotel quarantine for international arrivals would be cut to one week but did not give a date for when the new rules would apply.
Business travellers and Chinese students, who have been reluctant to travel overseas because of high airfares and long quarantine requirements, were also more likely to travel abroad.until next year at the earliest as citizens are still banned from travelling for leisure. In another significant easing of restrictions on foreigners and their families trying to get visas, Shanghai has scrapped a requirement for applicants to obtain official invitation letters to enter the country. The so-called PU letters, introduced in early 2020, and required as part of visa applications had become a major obstacle for expatriates and their dependents.The testing requirements for arrivals into China would also be relaxed.
