Xi Jinping has his top advisers have warned that criticism of their zero COVID-19 strategy will not be tolerated as concerns about the economic impact of harsh lockdowns grows.

Xi Jinping’s top advisers have warned they will not tolerate any criticism of the government’s zero COVID-19 policies as they double down on the fight against omicron despite growing concern about the economic fallout from lockdowns in a quarter of its cities.

China’s top leaders also threatened to “resolutely fight against any speech that distort, question or reject” the pandemic control policies, according to a memo from the meeting released on Thursday night.The comments came as Mr Xi faces growing criticism over China’s strict control measures which have seen cities likeat a time when the rest of the world is opening up.

“Relaxation will undoubtedly lead to massive numbers of infections, critical cases and deaths, seriously impacting economic and social development and people’s lives and health,” it said. “Clearly the Chinese government will keep its dynamic zero-COVID strategy, if not strengthen, for a while,” Nomura chief China economist Ting Lu said.
