Opinion: China’s transformed military must not be underestimated

After its 2008 operations in Georgia, Russia began a series of reforms that set the groundwork for its recent invasion of Ukraine.

But the ultimate test of such transformation programs lies on the battlefield. In this regard, the Russian military reforms appear to have been suboptimal at best. They began a broad program of investment in technology, people and ideas for Chinese defence and the forceful reunification of Taiwan. The most obvious aspect of this Chinese military transformation has been a peacetime build-up that is unprecedented in the modern era. Thousands of new tanks and rocket systems have been developed and deployed. Hundreds of advanced aircraft have been designed and issued to front-line squadrons.

Despite the cultural challenges inherent in the close collaboration of different military services, we should expect the Chinese to increase their investment in joint operations in the coming years. They have to because competent joint operations are a core capability for an invasion of Taiwan.A final area of focus for the PLA is its people. A contributing factor in Russia’s failures in Ukraine has been the low quality of its soldiers and tactical leaders.
